One of the very few Indian temples where Surya remains the presiding deity, founded in the 7th century under the Eastern Ganga king Devendra Varma a kilometre east of Srikakulam. The building standing today is largely the result of 18th-century work, reconstructed in 1778 by Elamanchili Pullaji Panthulu.
The Padma Purana holds that the sage Kasyapa installed the image of Surya here for the welfare of mankind.
