The chief temple of Bageshwar, standing at the meeting of the Sarayu and Gomati, its present building completed in 1450 by the Chand ruler Laxmi Chand over a site attested from about the 7th century. Its sculptures range from the 7th to the 16th century, and the Uttarakhand archaeology department took charge of the inscriptions and images of the 8th to 10th centuries in 1996.
Shiva is said to have come to this spot in the form of a tiger to bless the sage Markandeya, who worshipped him here.
