Penang's principal Murugan temple, known as the Waterfall Hilltop Temple: a shrine at the foot of the waterfall from about 1800 became the island's Thaipusam focal point, was relocated uphill after land was bought in 1914, and was rebuilt on a raised site from 2006 with a 21.6 m seven-tier gopuram, consecrated on 29 June 2012.
The temple's golden vel recalls the tale of the spear forged by Shiva's consort Parasakthi in eighteen forms that fused into a single indestructible weapon and was given to Murugan.
