History & significance

A Shakti shrine at Tamluk, the ancient port of Tamralipta, built by the Tamluk Raj family and rebuilt after the medieval Islamic conquest of Bengal. It later served as a gathering point where freedom fighters took their oaths during the independence movement.

Sthala katha — the legend

The left ankle of Sati is said to have fallen here, and the site is linked in local tradition to Bhima of the Mahabharata.
