History & significance

A Hanuman temple at Khuldabad, about 4 km from the Ellora caves, rebuilt in white marble in the 1960s after the earlier shrine was destroyed under Mughal rule. It is one of only three known temples where Hanuman is shown sleeping, the others being at Prayagraj and Jam Sawali, and fills with pilgrims at Hanuman Jayanti and Ram Navami.

Sthala katha — the legend

Hanuman is said to have fallen into bhava-samadhi here while listening to King Bhadrasena sing in praise of Rama, and to have agreed at the king's request to stay on and bless those who came.
