A stupa celebrated for the finest surviving sculpture of the aniconic phase of Buddhist art, where the Buddha is indicated by the dharma wheel, the bodhi tree or an empty throne rather than shown in person. The mound may go back to Ashoka in the third century BCE, while the stone railing and torana gateway were added in the Shunga period, the gateway commissioned by King Dhanabhuti; Buddhism continued at the site until about the twelfth century CE.
