A Kali shrine at Naihati begun in 1923 by Bhavesh Chakraborty, a jute-mill worker and social worker, famous for the twenty-two-foot image raised each year at Kali Puja and dressed in some twelve kilograms of gold and two hundred of silver. A permanent temple with a stone image was inaugurated in 2023, and the immersion procession draws crowds large enough to need over a thousand police.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Chakraborty is said to have been told by Kali in a dream to shape her as a giant twenty-two-foot image like those he had seen at Nabadwip.
