A modern memorial stupa and museum at Vaishali built to enshrine the relics of the Buddha that had been given to the Licchavi rulers of the city, approved in 2013 and completed for inauguration in July 2025. It was assembled from more than 42,000 Rajasthani sandstone blocks without modern reinforcement.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Tradition holds that after the Buddha's mahaparinirvana his remains were divided into eight shares among eight kings, each of whom raised a stupa over his portion.
