An extensive red-brick Buddhist temple precinct strung along the Batang Hari river, built up by the Melayu kingdom as it became Sumatra's dominant economic power in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the site was abandoned after a Singhasari attack in 1278 and rediscovered in 1824.
