The largest Hindu temple complex in East Java, about 12 kilometres north-east of Blitar, built up between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries with work starting in 1197 in the Kediri era and continuing through the Majapahit period. Its main temple is dedicated to Shiva, while its reliefs range widely over Vaishnava material, particularly Rama and Krishna narratives, and its three successive courtyards anticipate the arrangement of Balinese puras. It is named in the Nagarakretagama, and King Hayam Wuruk is recorded as having made it his favourite sanctuary.
