The hilltop shrine of the tutelary goddess of the Mysore royal house, its original structure Hoysala work of the 12th century and its tower added under the Vijayanagara rulers. A stairway of a thousand steps was cut in 1659, and in 1664 Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar set a monolithic granite Nandi on the 700th step; the temple is counted among the eighteen Shakta pithas as Krauncha Pitha.
Durga is said to have killed the buffalo-demon Mahishasura on this hill, from which the town took the name Mahishuru, now Mysuru.
