The chief temple of Jumla, standing above Khalanga Bazar in Chandannath Municipality and dedicated to Dattatreya; it was raised under the Kalyal dynasty, of whose rule and of whose connection with Chandannath few written records survive.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Chandannath Baba is said to have carried an image of Dattatreya here from Kashmir, and a cow that gave up her milk of her own accord on the spot is said to have revealed the sacred ground on which the temple was then built.
