History & significance

A Yangon shrine holding one of Myanmar's most venerated reclining Buddha images, 66 metres long. Sir Po Tha paid for the first image in 1899 and it was finished in 1907, but its proportions and stern face were judged wrong; it was pulled down in the 1950s and the replacement, carved under the Dawei master U Thaung with glass eyes made at the Naga Glass Factory, was consecrated in 1973.
