One of Sikhism's holiest sites, on the Ravi where Guru Nanak founded the town of Kartarpur in 1504 and spent his last eighteen years running a langar and a working farming community until his death in 1539. The main shrine was built in 1925 at a cost of Rs 1,35,600 funded by the Maharaja of Patiala, and the complex was enlarged in 2004 and again in 2018 for the Kartarpur Corridor.
When Hindus and Muslims quarrelled over the Guru's body, it is said the shawl covering him was lifted to reveal only flowers, which the two communities divided between them to cremate and to bury.
