Two ruined sixth-century temples at Tala on the Maniyari river, among the most important surviving architecture of the Dakshina Kosala region, excavated by the ASI between 1977 and 1988. The smaller Devrani shrine carries an elaborate figured doorway and shows southern influence while the larger Jethani follows northern convention and appears to have been an experiment that collapsed; a five-tonne, 2.7 m Rudra Shiva figure covered in animal and human faces was found buried here on 17 January 1988.
