Built in 1950 by the businessman Debendranath Chowdhury, who endowed property for its daily services, this Kumortuli shrine houses the image carried from the Dhakeshwari temple in Dhaka at Partition in 1947 and worshipped in Chowdhury's own house for two or three years first. The ten-armed goddess stands a foot and a half tall on her lion, flanked by Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesha.
The name Dhakeshwari means the hidden or covered goddess, from the tale of King Ballal Sen finding Durga concealed in the jungle.
