The oldest Burmese Buddhist temple in Penang, founded on 1 August 1803 as the Nandy Moloh Temple by U. Nandamala on land bought by Nyonya Betong. Its stupa was consecrated in 1805 and enclosed by an outer stupa in 1838, and a golden pagoda bell tower was added in 2011.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Arahant Upagutta, whose wooden shrine stands in the grounds, is held to have the power to turn away evil spirits, obstacles and dangers.
