The living Digambara Jain temple on the summit of Khandagiri hill above the ancient Jain caves at Bhubaneswar, its present structure built in the first quarter of the nineteenth century in Kalinga style. The main shrine holds Parshvanatha along with images of Mahavira and other Tirthankaras.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Local legend attributes the temple to the Kalinga king Kharavela of the first century BCE, an attribution its architecture does not support.
