History & significance

The tutelary temple of the Mewar rulers, first attributed to Bappa Rawal in the 8th century and rebuilt by Rana Kumbha and Rana Raimal after repeated destruction. The Maharanas ruled formally as the deity's regents, which made this complex the spiritual centre of the Mewar state.

Sthala katha — the legend

The 15th-century Ekalinga Mahatmya credits the original shrine to Bappa Rawal, founder of the Mewar line.
