The principal Shiva temple of Ernakulam city, from which the place takes its name, referred to in Sangam literature as existing under the Cheras. Its present buildings were put up between 1843 and 1846 under the patronage of Sankara Warrier of Edakkunni.
The Mahabharata episode attached to the site tells of Arjuna's severe penance to Shiva, who came disguised as a tribal hunter before granting him the Pashupata weapon.
