One of only two major Saraswati temples in the subcontinent, the other being Sharada Peeth, standing on the bank of the Godavari at Basar in Nirmal district. The article credits its construction to the sixth-century Nandagiri king Bijialudu, with the images reinstalled by a later Nandagiri chieftain in the 17th century after invaders destroyed them.
Tradition holds that Maharishi Vyasa chose this spot after the Kurukshetra war, and that the name Basara comes from Vasara, the time he spent here in prayer.
