A limestone cave shrine about 55 km from Jeypore in Koraput district, housing a two-metre Shiva lingam that devotees believe is still growing. Worship was formally established in the mid-17th century by Maharajah Veer Vikram Dev, and Mahashivaratri now brings more than two hundred thousand pilgrims up its two hundred steps.
Rama is said to have found the hidden lingam while crossing the Dandakaranya forest with Sita and Lakshmana and named it Gupteshwar, the god in hiding, after which it lay forgotten until a hunter stumbled on it again.
