The seat of the Ramraiya order in Dehradun, founded by Baba Ram Rai, eldest son of Guru Har Rai, on lands and funds granted by Aurangzeb; the central complex was finished in 1699 and structural work by 1706. Its minarets, domes and Mughal-style gardens and wall paintings, some over three hundred years old, are being restored by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The city's name is traced to the dera Baba Ram Rai pitched in the doon valley after his banishment, itself said to follow his rendering of a verse before Aurangzeb in altered words to avoid giving offence.
