The chief Jain centre of the Santara dynasty, founded in the seventh century, where the Padmavati shrine was rebuilt by Vira Santara in 1061 and the surviving Panchakuta Basadi raised in 1077 by Chattaladevi. It remained a major pilgrimage site until Hoysala patronage shifted to Vaishnavism in the twelfth century.
Prince Jinadatta of Mathura is said to have fled assassination carrying a golden image of Padmavati and, after a dream beneath a tree, founded Pombuccapura - today's Humcha - and its shrines to Parshvanatha and Padmavati.
