A cliff-top Vishnu temple above the Varkala beach, whose restoration is credited to a Pandya king around the first century BC with further renovation during the reign of Umayamma Rani in 1677-84. Its circular sanctum under a conical copper dome is characteristic of Kerala building.
Brahma is said to have cursed the devas to be born as mortals, and they performed penance at Varkala, the place where the sage Narada's cloth fell, building a Vishnu temple there to free themselves.
