The northern of the four cardinal pithams traditionally established by Adi Shankara, seat of the Shankaracharya of the north at Joshimath in Garhwal; it stood vacant for some 165 years until Brahmananda Saraswati was installed on 11 May 1941 and built the present thirty-room monastery and the Purnagiri Devi shrine.
