The shrine of Pune's gramadevata, traditionally traced to Jijabai Bhosale's arrival in the city around 1630. It ranks as the first of the Manacha Ganpati and was central to Bal Gangadhar Tilak's 1893 reshaping of the Ganesh festival into a public celebration.
The image is said to have been self-manifested and no bigger than a grain of rice at first, growing to its present size under successive coats of red sandalwood paste.
