Sri Lanka's great multi-faith shrine, where Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Vedda people honour the same god of the jungle hill — Skanda-Murugan as Kataragama deviyo. The July festival's fire-walking and kavadi, and the ancient pada yatra walked barefoot down the island's east coast from Jaffna, make it the deepest shared pilgrimage of the island.
Murugan, come south hunting, loved and wed the Vedda maiden Valli of the hill — the god marrying into the island's first people; his shrine here holds no image, only a casket-yantra behind a curtain, honoured with Buddhist Kiri Vehera beside and mosque within the same sacred grove.
Kataragama is a small town in the south-east of Sri Lanka, 19 km inland from Tissamaharama. The subsidiary shrine of Sella Kataragama lies about four miles further on from the town.
