The main Shaiva temple of Pithapuram, which also houses the shrine of Puruhutika Devi, counted among the eighteen maha shakti pithas. Pithapuram itself is named in the Skanda Purana, in Srinatha's fifteenth-century Bhimeswara Puranamu and in Samudragupta's Prayaga pillar inscription of about 350 CE; a monolithic Nandi stands before the sanctum.
