A stupa and inscription complex at the foot of Mandalay Hill begun by King Mindon Min in 1860, its 57-metre main stupa modelled on the Shwezigon at Nyaung-U. Its 729 marble slabs, each housed in a small shrine, carry the Tipitaka in stone and are often called the world's largest book; they were opened to the public in 1868 and served the Fifth Buddhist Synod.
