History & significance

Royal temple at the foot of Mandalay Hill housing a Buddha carved from a single block of pale green Sagyin marble, consecrated in 1865. Begun by King Mindon Min in 1853, it took until 1878 to finish after a palace rebellion and other disorder stalled the work.
