Mumbai's best-known public Ganesha installation, established on 12 September 1934 by the Koli fishing community and local traders of Lalbaug. Its ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi display draws well over a million visitors a day, and the idol has been sculpted by the Kambli family for more than eight decades.
Fishermen and market vendors whose Peru Chawl market closed in 1932 vowed a permanent Ganesha if they were granted a new marketplace, and installed the idol in thanksgiving when they got one.
