One of Odisha's most visited Shakti shrines, its establishment traced to about 1475 CE in the reign of Purushottama Deva of Kalinga and credited to his general Govinda Bhanja. The temple marks the absorption of a tribal goddess cult into mainstream Hindu worship in the Keonjhar uplands.
The king is said to have carried the goddess from Puri on the condition that he never look back; hearing her ornaments fall silent in the forest at Ghatgaon he turned, and she stayed there for good.
