One of the oldest surviving Shiva temples in Kashmir, dated to about 400 CE and rebuilt in medieval times; the Rajatarangini records King Jayasimha crowning it with a golden kalasa.

The name is glossed as 'Mam Mal', 'do not go', from the tale that Parvati set Ganesha to guard the spot and Shiva, refused entry, struck off his head and replaced it with an elephant's.
