The principal Shakti temple of Bhawanipatna, honouring Manikeshwari as the tutelary goddess of the Naga-descended ruling line of Kalahandi, whose worship the article traces back to the 10th century. The present building was begun by Udit Narayan Deo and finished in 1947 under Brajamohan Deo.
