Built in 1596 under Venkatappa Nayaka of the Keladi and Ikkeri kingdom, whose family held Marikamba as their tutelary deity. The shrine preserves the goddess's footprints, first consecrated on the town's outskirts and later moved to its centre, and hosts the triennial Marikamba Jathra with a sixteen-foot chariot.
Adi Shankaracharya is said to have been told by the goddess in a dream to establish her temple on this spot.
