A Shiva temple on the Markanda river at Shahabad Markanda, about 20 km south of Ambala on the Grand Trunk Road, whose present building dates from the early twentieth century. The river takes its name from the sage Markandeya, and the temple walls carry the scene of Shiva overcoming Yama.
Markandeya was fated to die at sixteen, but when Yama came for him Shiva burst out in fury and struck the death-god down, later reviving him on condition that the boy live forever.
