Founded in 1410 by Lama Dugpa Dorje on the south bank of the Indus about 26 km from Leh, Matho is the only Ladakhi monastery of the Sakya school. Its assembly hall centres on a Shakyamuni Buddha with chapels to Sakya Pandita and other lamas, and an adjoining museum holds thangkas of the 14th and 15th centuries along with festival masks and robes.

At the Matho Nagrang festival two monks known as the Rongtsan oracles, chosen every three years after months of seclusion and meditation, are possessed by the monastery guardians and answer questions about the year ahead for Matho and for Ladakh.
