The oldest temple of Bishnupur in Bankura district, West Bengal, founded in 997 CE by the Malla king Jagat Malla for Durga as Mrinmoyee, whose image is made of clay. Its Durga Puja, held with the Malla royal rites, is among the oldest continuously observed in Bengal.
Jagat Malla is said to have moved his capital from Pradyumnapur to Bishnupur at the goddess's own direction, and to have raised the clay shrine beside his new palace.
