A Mahayana Buddhist temple and stupa complex in inland Riau raised under the Srivijaya empire in the eleventh century and substantially reworked in the twelfth, serving as both a religious and a trading centre; recorded by European surveyors from 1860 and mapped by archaeologists in 1983, it is now a protected national monument.
