The principal pagoda of Magway in central Myanmar. Raised from its original 55.5 feet to 87 feet by the Bagan king Saw Lu (1077-1084), it was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1847 and rebuilt to about 104 feet by the mayor Min Din Min Hla Kyaw Gaung.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Legend holds that the pagoda was first built by a wealthy man called U Baw Gyaw and his wife.
