The principal goddess temple of Anakapalle, renovated in 1611 by Kakarlapudi Appalaraju Payakarao after the Golconda Nawab appointed him to govern the area. Its largest gathering falls on Kottha Amavasya, the day before Ugadi.
The shrine is said to have been founded for the family goddess Kakatambika, who came to be known as Nookambika, one of the nine forms of Shakti.
