The temple at Gudimallam, about 24 km south-east of Tirupati, enshrines a linga that scholars count among the earliest surviving and unmistakable images of Shiva, dated variously from the 3rd-1st century BCE to the early centuries CE; the apsidal stone sanctuary around it is usually assigned to the later Chola and Vijayanagara periods, and the shrine, still in worship, has been protected by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1954.
