One of the 108 celebrated Shiva temples of Kerala, built by the ruler of Kollengode, formerly Venganad, and long held by the Kollengode palace as a favoured shrine. It stands within a pond called Perumkulam and keeps Maha Shivaratri as its chief festival.

Parashurama is said to have set the lingam within the pool so that the water would temper the god's fierceness and calm him.
