The royal temple of the Bangli kingdom, standing in terraces up a hillside with an eleven-tiered meru and a padmasana for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; copper-plate inscriptions from the 9th to 13th centuries mention it, and royal officials once swore their oaths of office here.
Villagers read the sacred banyan in the outer courtyard as an omen: a branch falling to the north-east foretells a king's death, one to the north-west a brahmin's.
