One of Bali's Sad Kahyangan Jagad or six great directional sanctuaries, guarding the west and tied to the ancestors of the rajas of Tabanan; destroyed in 1604 and rebuilt in 1959, its principal shrine is a seven-tiered meru to Mahadewa on the slope of Bali's second-highest volcano.
