Founded in 1660 by Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu, this temple's Raghunath is treated as the presiding deity of the whole Kullu valley. Some three hundred village gods are carried in to attend him at the Kullu Dussehra, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Jagat Singh is said to have fallen ill with leprosy after an astrologer he wrongly accused died, and to have been cured only when images of Rama, Sita and Hanuman were fetched from Ayodhya and installed here.
