A leading Shiva temple of north Kerala, rebuilt into its present form in the early eleventh century after earlier work by the Mushika or Kolathiri rulers, with a square sanctum under a two-tiered pyramidal roof. It was attacked and partly destroyed by Mysorean forces in the late eighteenth century before being repaired.
The sage Maandhata is said to have been given a Shiva linga to install where no cremation ground lay, finally setting it at Taliparamba, after which the linga repeatedly vanished and reappeared to later devotees.
