The only one of the eight original relic stupas raised over the divided cremation remains of the Buddha that has never been opened, built at Ramagrama by the Koliya princes and enlarged between the Mauryan and Gupta periods. The seven-metre mound still lies largely buried and unexcavated, and was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage tentative list in 1996.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
When Ashoka came to redistribute the relics of the Buddha, a naga guardian of the stupa is said to have stopped him, leaving Ramagrama alone undisturbed.
