One of the wealthiest and busiest Mariamman temples in Tamil Nadu, north of Tiruchirappalli, whose present structure was raised in the early eighteenth century by Vijayaraya Chakravarti II. Its deity is sought above all for relief from disease.
Tradition says the image once stood at Srirangam and was removed after it was blamed for the presiding deity's illness, then found by passers-by who raised a shrine, the Kannanur Mariamman temple, which grew into the present one.
